群馬県前橋市のスペシャルティコーヒー焙煎所兼コーヒースタンド。3つの焙煎機とカッピングスペースを備えた工房と、焙煎したてのコーヒー豆をその場で味わえるスタンドを併設。

ミニマムな空間の中で必要な機能を満たすために、壁を建てて仕切るのではなく機能をもったスケールの大きな家具を配置し客席と工房を仕切った。コーヒー豆の焙煎から飲料として提供されるまでの、素材の過程をみせる場所であることから、カウンターやベンチ、中央ディスプレイ什器には通常小口を隠すランバー材を現しで使用し、建築資材の過程もみられる仕上げとしている。資材の下地や過程を見せることにより、素材同士を連続的に扱い、過去と現在を分けずに広がりのある空間とした。

製作什器の一部は分離発注し、設計者も自ら現場管理、施工をすることでコストダウンにつなげた。設計者と信頼のおける職人達と近い距離で製作していくことで、ディテールの細部にまで気を配ることが可能になり独特な魅力を感じられる空間になったと考える。

 

This project involves the renovation of a former office building into a specialty coffee roastery and stand. The space integrates a workshop equipped with three roasting machines and a cupping area, alongside a stand where customers can experience freshly roasted beans on-site.

To accommodate all necessary functions within a limited 41-square-meter footprint, we avoided traditional partitions, instead using a large-scale display shelf to define the boundary between the seating area and the workshop. This multifunctional element allows customers to observe the roasting process while providing essential storage for the workshop side. The counters, benches, and central display are crafted from lumber-core plywood with exposed edges—intentionally omitting the edge banding typically used to hide the material’s cross-section. This reflects the shop’s philosophy of showcasing the process, from raw coffee beans to the final beverage, by revealing the underlying “process” of the building materials themselves. By aligning these raw elements with the original structure, we established a sense of cohesiveness rather than contrast, creating an expansive environment where past and present coexist seamlessly.

To optimize the budget, we directly supervised the construction and self-performed the fabrication of several fixtures. Working in close collaboration with trusted craftsmen allowed us to refine every detail, resulting in a space with a distinct and enduring character.
