かつて日本最初のフィンランド式サウナ施設である「スカンジナビアクラブ」があった渋谷に50年以上の時を経て誕生した鉄骨3階建てのサウナ施設である。近年のサウナブームのきっかけとなったマンガ＆エッセイ『サ道』の著者であり、日本サウナ・スパ協会任命「サウナ大使」を務めるタナカカツキ氏が初めて総合プロデュースを行うサウナとして我々は計画の初期段階からデザイナーとして参加した。
収支計画から割り出された３層ヴォリュームの１階にワークスペースとレストラン、２・３階に８種類のサウナ室と２種類の水風呂、緑に囲まれた外気浴スペースを計画した。昔ながらのサウナのイメージを払拭すべく「ウェルネス」や「メディテーション」をコンセプトとして、身体に優しくリラックスできる・清潔感があり洗練されているデザインを心がけた。サウナ室と水風呂は大使と企画チームと一緒にそれぞれコンセプトを立て、素材の使い方や各部の細かな寸法を様々な分野のプロフェッショナルと詳細に検討し、サウナの聖地フィンランドやリトアニアへの視察で得た知見もふんだんに盛り込みながらつくり込んでいる。全体の仕上げや造作家具は触覚の心地よさを意識したマテリアルとディティールを選択した。天板やベンチの角を大きく取った曲面や、柔らかく滑りにくいゴムチップの床、肌の触れる部位に応じて仕上げ方を変えた浴室仕上げの石など「触れる」ということにフォーカスしてデザインしている。また、館内の家具や看板、ソープホルダーなどの細かな什器まで一貫してデザインすることで上質で非日常的な世界観をつくっている。多くの情報に晒される現代人を思考の世界から感覚の世界へ開放し心身をととのえる、都会のオアシスが誕生した。

 

Located in Shibuya, Tokyo, on the historic site of “Scandinavia Club”—Japan’s first Finnish sauna—this three-story steel-frame facility marks a revival of the area’s sauna heritage after more than 50 years. As designers involved from the project’s inception, we collaborated closely with Katsuki Tanaka, the author of Sa-do and Japan’s officially appointed “Sauna Ambassador,” who served as the general producer.
The three-level volume integrates a workspace and restaurant on the first floor, while the second and third floors house eight distinct sauna rooms, two cold plunges, and an outdoor air-bath area enveloped in greenery. Departing from traditional sauna stereotypes, the design centers on “wellness” and “meditation,” prioritizing a refined, clean aesthetic that fosters deep, gentle relaxation. Each space was developed through detailed conceptual workshops with the Ambassador and a diverse team of specialists, incorporating insights gained from research expeditions to Finland and Lithuania.
A primary focus was placed on the tactile experience. We meticulously selected materials and details that prioritize physical comfort: generously rounded edges on counters and benches, soft and slip-resistant rubber-chip flooring, and stone finishes in the bathing areas tailored to different types of body contact. By consistently designing everything from the bespoke furniture and signage to custom soap holders, we established a cohesive, high-end atmosphere that offers an escape from the everyday. This urban oasis invites modern individuals to shift from a world of information to a world of sensation, providing a sanctuary to harmonize the mind and body.
