This three-story steel-frame sauna facility was established in Shibuya where the Scandinavian Club, Japan’s first Finnish-style sauna facility was located more than 50 years ago. This is the first sauna to be comprehensively produced by Mr. Katsuki Tanaka, a sauna ambassador appointed by the Japan Sauna and Spa Association, as well as the author of the manga and essay ‘Sa-do’ which triggered the recent sauna boom in Japan. We participated as designers from the initial planning stage.
Based on the income and expenditure plan, we created three floors: a workspace and restaurant on the first floor, eight types of sauna rooms, two types of water baths, and an outdoor air bath space surrounded by greenery on the second and third floors. We challenged the notion of traditional of saunas, by designing based on concepts of ‘wellness’ and ‘meditation’, aiming to offer a gentle, relaxing experience that is both clean and sophisticated. We created concepts for the sauna room and water bath respectively with Mr. Tanaka and the planning team, and worked in detail with professionals in various fields such as a sauna manufacturer and a sound system designer to determine the use of materials and the detailed dimensions of each part. The sauna rooms and water baths were created incorporating a wealth of knowledge gained from visits to sauna meccas such as Finland and Lithuania. The materials and details of the overall finish and the furniture were selected based on the concept of “comfort to the touch”. As a result, the table tops and benches have large, curved corners, the floor is made of soft, non-slip rubber chips, and the stone in the bathrooms is finished in different ways depending on where it touches the skin. By designing the furniture, signboards and down to the soap holders and small details in the building, we were able to create an extraordinary atmosphere. An urban oasis has been designed to free modern individuals from the overwhelming influx of information, guiding them from a realm of constant thought to one rich in sensory experience, while nurturing both body and mind.
