During retail hours, the expanded fixtures create various zones for displaying approximately 2,000 colorful umbrellas. For events, the fixtures fold up to resemble pillars, transforming the store into a plain, open space. The layout was informed by the three existing structural columns. We treated these pillars as spatial objects rather than just structural support, expanding their scale to create functional fixtures that were then replicated throughout the interior. The flagship store for Waterfront, Japan’s leading umbrella brand. The project required a versatile space capable of hosting exhibitions and events alongside retail. To make the space itself a form of advertisement, we developed a concept centered on folding and unfolding, designing all fixtures to fold away just like an umbrella.
