This is a project to renovate a building which used as an office into a specialty coffee roaster and coffee stand. It has a workshop equipped with three roasting machines and a coffee cupping space, and a coffee stand where customers can taste freshly roasted coffee beans.

In order to fit all the necessary functions for the shop into the limited space of 41, we placed a large display shelf to divide the seating area and the workshop instead of building walls to divide the space. From the seating area, customers can see the workshop through the display shelf, while from the workshop side, the shelf can be used for storage.

We used lumber-core plywood for the counter, the bench and the display shelf in the center. Normally, the edges of plywood are covered with edge banding or other materials, but since this is a place to show the process of roasting coffee beans and serving them as beverages, we left the edges exposed so that the finishing process of building materials can be seen. By showing the finishing process of the materials and the elements that are common to the original building, we have created a cohesiveness rather than a contrast between the old and the new with the original building. By showing both old and new materials at the same time, we created an expansive space without separating the past from the present.

In order to reduce the cost, we supervised the construction and constructed some of the fixtures by ourselves. By working closely with trusted constructors, we were able to pay attention to every detail and to create a space gives a sense of unique strength.
