This renovation of a modern condominium in Kashiwa, Chiba, focuses on a restrained material palette to accentuate the pristine quality of the existing structure. The walls, interior doors, and shelving were crafted entirely from softwood plywood—a material chosen for its accessibility and cost-efficiency. While the combination of plywood, polycarbonate, and industrial vinyl flooring often risks a rugged, “DIY” aesthetic, this project achieves a different result through architectural precision. By employing the plywood not only as surface cladding but also as linear structural elements, and through meticulous detailing, the typical impression of mass-produced materials was neutralized. The final space is one of unexpected refinement, where the natural wood grain is elevated into a sophisticated interior landscape that transcends its industrial origins.
